August in Upcountry Maui: The Quiet Reset After Stampede

The dust from the Oskie Rice arena has settled. The June 27 parade banners are down, the food booths have packed out, and Baldwin Avenue is back to its regular Saturday tempo. For anyone who lives up here, August is the month the town belongs to residents again. The calendar is not empty, though. It is just running on a different clock, one built around gallery hours, farm-stand mornings, and dinner reservations you can actually get.

Here is what to plan around this month if Upcountry is home.

Three dates worth writing down

Most of August will look like any other slow month up the mountain. Three dates are the exception.

Everything else is optional. These three anchor the month.

Why the Hui is doing more work than usual

The Youth Art Exhibition opened July 31 at the Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center with a free public reception, and it stays on view through Aug 21. Gallery hours run Tuesday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and admission is free. The show features work from more than 250 young people who came through the Hui's summer arts programming, and it is genuinely worth an hour if you have not walked the Kaluanui grounds since spring.

What makes this August unusual is what happens next. The Hui rolls straight from the youth show into open registration for Mālama Wao Akua, the juried exhibition presented in partnership with the East Maui Watershed Partnership. This is the 22nd year of the show, which is open to residents of Maui Nui only, and the deadlines matter. Online registration opens Aug 18. Priority registration closes at midnight on Aug 26, with a $10 per-piece adult fee before that date and $20 after. Artwork drop-off is Sept 1 between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. under the roundabout awning at the Baldwin Avenue campus. The show itself opens Sept 11 and runs through Nov 6.

If you have ever thought about entering, this is the two-week window. If you have not, block Sept 11 anyway. It is the strongest opening reception of the fall.

Alongside the exhibitions, the Hui is still running adult sessions in jewelry fabrication, printmaking, photography, and mixed media through the summer. The class calendar tends to reset in late August, so if you have been waiting for a specific instructor, check the schedule this week rather than next.

Saturday mornings: two markets, two different jobs

Upcountry has more than one Saturday market, and residents tend to loyalty one and skip the other. That is a mistake in August, because they are doing different things right now.

Upcountry Farmers Market, 7 to 11 a.m. at Kulamalu Town Center in Pukalani, is the produce run. Fresh-baked goods, honey, fish, tropical flowers, kombucha, locally roasted coffee, and the samosa and poke stalls that regulars line up for by 7:15. This is the market that "favors the early shopper," as one local guide phrases it, and the produce tables are noticeably lighter by 9:30.

The Saturday market on Hali‘imaile Road, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 886 Haliimaile Rd in Makawao, runs later and leans more craft, ono food, and community booth. Different rhythm, different reason to go. If you want tomatoes for the week, Kulamalu. If you want lunch and a wander, Hali‘imaile.

Two other stops worth folding into the Saturday loop this month. Kula Country Farms on Kula Highway is open Monday through Saturday and is running summer stone fruit and Kula produce right now. And Maui Nui Farm hosts its own weekly farmers market on their 40-acre Kula property, which is a quieter alternative if the Kulamalu parking lot is not your idea of a morning.

The dining reset

Rodeo weekend concentrates every dinner reservation in Upcountry into a 72-hour window. August is when the tables open back up.

A few things worth knowing about the current Makawao lineup:

• Makawao Public House on Makawao Avenue is still the most-consistently-booked table in town, but midweek reservations in August are actually available. The kitchen is leaning into the Upcountry Sausage Co. pork sausage plate, the Maui Nui venison dish with uala and kalo, and a wagyu smash burger. Business-casual dress code, which surprises some first-time diners.
• Casanova Italian Restaurant has held its corner of the intersection since 1986, running the wood-fired oven that was the first one imported to the island. Sunday brunch through dinner service. This is the room that hosted the Hui's Art Affair After Party last year, and it usually picks up live music in late August.
• Polli's Mexican Restaurant has been the other corner of that same intersection since 1981. Margaritas, fish tacos, and the vegetarian menu that has kept it in the paniolo, artist, and biker rotation for four decades.
• Hali‘imaile General Store is the Bev Gannon room on Hali‘imaile Road, opened in 1988 in the old plantation store. Farm-to-table before it was a phrase anyone used. Reservations recommended, especially for the Friday and Saturday seatings.
• Marlow is the newer entry in Makawao Town. Fresh, locally inspired fusion, craft cocktails, draft beer, and a wine list. Bring a layer. Upcountry cools off fast after sunset, and the outdoor tables catch the evening breeze off the ranch.
• Satori runs the cozy outdoor courtyard for izakaya and hand rolls, with the gobo chips and ‘ahi tataki that regulars order without looking at the menu.

For daytime, Komoda Store and Bakery has been running since 1916 and still opens at 7 a.m. The cream puffs, stick doughnuts, and cream-filled malasadas sell out most mornings by mid-morning. If you have out-of-town family visiting in August, this is the errand to run first, not last.

Coffee has quietly become one of the best reasons to stop in town. Espresso Mafia graduated from food truck to café and pours what is, by broad local agreement, one of the better espressos on the island. The honey cream latte with local honey and house vanilla is the order. Vida by Sip Me on a Baldwin Avenue courtyard runs organic coffee, tea, and juice with an upstairs workspace that is genuinely useable if you need to answer email for an hour.

And on the shave ice side, Kula Kups at 24 Kiopaa Street is open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. most days, running boba, halo halo, and, as of this year, Dubai chocolate. Worth the detour if you are already going to the post office.

Between meals

A few other small things happening this month that residents ask about.

The Saturday morning classes at Lumeria Maui Retreat Center off Baldwin Avenue continue through August, 8 to 9 a.m. weekly. The 8:30 a.m. arts and culture session at 1813 Baldwin also runs every Saturday and is free.

Hot Island Glass, founded in 1992 by Chris Richards, still runs live glassblowing demonstrations most days on Baldwin Avenue. If you have visitors coming through and cannot face Haleakalā crowds on a summer weekend, this is a 45-minute stop that does the job.

Maui Hands on Baldwin, which represents more than 300 local artists across sculpture, painting, and printmaking, tends to rotate its front-of-gallery display in early August. If you have been meaning to look at a piece for a specific wall at home, the new inventory usually lands mid-month.

What the month actually asks of you

The Upcountry calendar in August is not a roundup. It is a two-week planning window. Between now and Aug 26 there is a youth show to see, a juried entry to file if you make work, two farmers markets doing different jobs, and a dining rotation that is finally reachable without a two-week reservation. After Aug 26, the town shifts into the pre-Mālama Wao Akua rhythm and stays there until the Sept 11 opening.

Plan the next three Saturdays around that shape and August stops feeling like a slow month. It starts feeling like the month Upcountry works best.
